Children proudly wear golden lion tamarin costumes during an AMLD event in Brazil.

The Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado (AMLD) conservation education efforts primarily target schoolchildren using the golden lion tamarin as a flagship species for the Atlantic Forest, the area where they work.  AMLD provides long-term training for teachers at 14 schools in the Silva Jardim municipality.  The teachers participate in periodic courses to learn about ideas and activities to implement in their schools.  The activities are focused on the native flora and fauna, threats, and conservation actions.  The teachers adapt the activities for their school, community, students’ level of knowledge and understanding, and personal teaching interest.

Additionally, the local community learns more about Atlantic Forest conservation at the Adelmar F. Coimbra Filho Education Center, which is located at the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve. Since its opening in 1989, more than 16,000 people have visited the education center.  The building hosts an exhibit room, auditorium, library and an interpretative trail.

AMLD also has traveling exhibitions at special events, such as municipal anniversaries, agricultural fairs, scientific expositions, and other commemorative dates, including Arbor Day and World Environment Day.  During these events, they display panels, boxes with seeds from native Atlantic Forest species, skeletons of animals, and facilitate games and activities for children.
